Up until now, I've kept shtumm about how Old Radi has been playing for time at The Hague. Sulking in his cell and refusing to turn up at his own trial! That takes some doing.
Now at least,Old Radi has decided to pitch up although he says that he sees it as "a status conference hearing" and not part of the trial.
Just listen to the guy...
"I do not want to boycott these proceedings, but I cannot take part in something that has been bad from the start and where my fundamental rights have been violated," Karadzic said.
Now bear in mind that Karadzic faces two counts of genocide and nine other charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes. He has refused to enter pleas, but insists he is innocent of all charges.
Radi has been arguing that he not had enough time to prepare for the trial, saying there are 1.3 million pages of documents to study! If that's true, that's one heck of a lot of documents. And I can bet you $64 billion that he won't read them.
He denied stalling, and said imposing a lawyer on him would not help...
"It is with joy that I am preparing for these proceedings," he said through a translator.
"Nobody can get through this material better than I can, no lawyer. The best possible solution would be that the defense be given sufficient time" to prepare.
As far as I am concerned, Karadzic should do a Bernie Madoff and plead guilty. When the game is up, it's up. No point driving everybody meshuggah with "I didn't do it" when the whole world knows that you did. That's just wasting everybody's time and money.
So what's the solution?
Well.... Old Radi was a psychiatrist. And he should, of course, be taken straight back to the nut-house where he belongs.

I suppose one man's "war criminal" is another man's "freedom fighter".
